Lunar elevator & locomotive compared
This manned lunar space elevator is approximately 160 feet long, about the length of a modern locomotive and two box cars and would carry a crew of two. The pressurized crew compartment is on the right end while the solar-powered climber mechanism is in the middle between the two cargo arrays. The climber mechanism employs a pair of continuous track caterpillar treads that pinch the ribbon and propel the elevator via friction to a velocity of about 60 mph.
